Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

Nozomu Itoshiki. A high school teacher who is undoubtedly one of the most pessimistic humans on the planet, but that’s why I love him!

Both manga and anime, I have throughly enjoyed this series as it explores various personalities, even with dark themes, but still keeping a comedic style. Okay I agree, the first scene of this anime is not something you really expect, but none the less I thought it was hilarious, especially the dialogue.

It’s a beautiful morning in Japan, and a young girl named Kafuka Fuura is on her way to school, happily walking through the cherry blossoms. I can safely say it’s not everyday you see this on the way to school, but there was our very own Nozomu Itoshiki, hanging from a tree unconscious. That’s right folks, he’s had enough of life.

Lucky Kafuka Fuura is highly optimistic, so she tries to grab him and pull him down and eventually succeeds, although she saves the mans life, he responds ‘Why did you shake me?! YOU COULD HAVE KILLED ME!’, which is rather odd for someone who was set on dying anyway.

Kafuka Fuura is so optimistic that she thought he was trying to ‘grow taller’ by stretching himself from the tree, as her mother and father tried to do on quite a few occassions, completely oblivious to what the man and her parents were actually trying to do.

Kafuka Fuura goes to school to find out that this man is her teacher, much to his disappointment. Now, this class isn’t any ordinary class, oh no! Every member of this class has a distinct ‘issue’ that they have, for example one student can only communicate by texting (quite abusively sometimes), another comes into school with bruises all over her body and one likes to stalk people, among many many others. With Nozomu Itoshiki constantly in despair, it’s amazing how these kids actually learn anything at all! The series deals with the human psyche and how different people deal with different situations.

With all these problems in just one classroom, how will any of them cope? We always have Kafuka Fuura to make the best out of any situation, even if it is multiple attempts at non-existence, nothing can make her sad. Will Nozomu Itoshiki ever overcome his soul crushing despair and gain a will to live by helping the students with their problems, or is he doomed to wander the earth until death comes for him or he goes to death, leaving the students with no hope of getting a decent education? Who knows, poor little kids.

As I have stated this manga/anime combines comedy with some dark themes, which I think is just great, it’s not depressing watching it at all, it’s making the best out of any situation and laughing at it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and remember, even the most opposite of personalities can compliment each other. A must see!
