Right at the start of 2012 we get a kick in the face. North America distributor, Bandai Entertainment is shutting down production of new entertainment.
By now I’m sure most of you know who Bandai is correct? Well I hope so. Bandai Entertainment is one of the largest Anime companies going and one of the major distributors of Anime in the US from the year 1990 onwards. Not to get mistaken with the parent company Bandai which is based in Japan. Yeah the two are different, just to clear that one up.
It was announced last week that the North America based Bandai Entertainment is to shut down starting next month. Now why is this bad? How does it effect you? Well for one, this is rather shocking when you come to think about it. Bandai were meant to be in a good place but with this news, clearly something is up. Now how does this effect the media?
Bandai Entertainment have said that they will stop creating new content to distribute and instead, focus on licensed distributions. Your still be able to order current lines up until the licenses expires but titles which are yet to be released have been cancelled. This is a shame and for those who want to know just what, here is the list of cancelled material.
- Turn A Gundam
- Code Geass: Renya
- Kannagi volume 4, 5 and 6
- Lucky Star: Boo Boo Kagaboo
- Mobile Suit Gundam 00I
- Tales of the Abyss: Jade’s Secret Memories
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann volume 7
- Code Geass R2
The real shame here is of course the number of people who will be losing their jobs due to the close. let’s wish them the best in finding new work in the coming months. On the licensing side of things there is a chance the titles will be picked up by a new company but for now we will just have to wait and see.
